If you clicked on this, you were probably looking for realistic practice with game music client briefs. Here's a scenario that shows what developers need from composers - perfect for building your skills without the pressure of a real project.

Have fun :)

Game Overview

Genre: Word Puzzle RPG
Platform: Mobile (iOS/Android)
Art Style: Hand-drawn fantasy illustrations with parchment textures
Target Audience: Ages 30-55, word game enthusiasts, casual RPG players

Game Lore:
In the ancient Library of Lexicon, words hold literal magical power. Players are apprentice Word Weavers who must restore stories that have been corrupted by the Void - a malevolent force that steals meaning from language itself. Each level represents a different story or legend that needs to be "rewoven" by finding the correct words to fill in gaps left by the Void's influence.

The game combines word formation puzzles with light RPG elements. Players have a character with stats like Vocabulary, Focus, and Inspiration that can be upgraded. Different types of words provide different magical effects - emotional words heal, action words deal damage to Void creatures, descriptive words reveal hidden paths through corrupted stories.

The meta-narrative follows the player character's journey from novice to master Word Weaver, guided by Sage Verbina, the last remaining master of the ancient art. As players progress, they uncover the origin of the Void and work toward the ultimate goal of reweaving the Master Chronicle - the story that contains all other stories.

Core Mechanics: Form words from letter tiles, RPG progression, story restoration mini-games, boss battles against Void creatures using word magic.

Musical Brief

From: Jennifer Walsh, Creative Director
Subject: Music for Word Weaver Chronicles - Thinking Mystical Library Vibes

"Hello! We're looking for someone who can capture the feeling of ancient magic and scholarly wisdom. Our game is unique because it combines word puzzles with RPG storytelling, so the music needs to support both the contemplative puzzle-solving and the magical adventure elements.

What we need:

  • Main theme (3-4 minutes, should feel like entering a magical library)

  • Puzzle solving background (6-8 minutes, very long loop for extended play)

  • Story/narrative music (2-3 minutes, for reading story segments)

  • Victory/word completion stingers (5-10 different short pieces, 2-4 seconds each)

  • Boss battle theme (3-4 minutes, facing Void creatures)

  • Upgrade/progression music (30 seconds, feels rewarding)

The aesthetic we're going for: Think about the feeling of being in an ancient library where books come alive, words float in the air with magical energy, and knowledge itself has power. We want something that feels scholarly but not boring, mystical but not dark or scary.

Reference points:

  • The library scenes from Beauty and the Beast

  • Some of the more contemplative music from Elder Scrolls games

  • The magical workshop feeling from Little Alchemy

  • Celtic/medieval influences would work well

Technical requirements:

  • Mobile-optimized file sizes (compressed but still high quality)

  • 44.1kHz, 16-bit for final delivery

  • Loop points must be sample-accurate

  • Please provide low/medium/high quality versions for different devices

Player behavior considerations: Our focus groups show people play this game in quiet environments - libraries, bedrooms, coffee shops. The music needs to feel like it belongs in contemplative spaces. Also, many players are 40+ and appreciate more sophisticated musical arrangements.

Timeline: First round of compositions in 4 weeks, revisions and final delivery 2 weeks after that.

Special request: If possible, we'd love some subtle musical "wordplay" - maybe musical phrases that mirror the rhythm of speech, or harmonic progressions that feel like sentences. Nothing too on-the-nose, but little touches that reinforce the word/language theme.

We're excited to bring this project to life with the right musical partner!"
